Waterford City & County Council has prepared their Draft Climate Action Plan 2024-2029 in line with the Government’s overall National Climate Objective, which seeks to pursue and achieve, by no later than the end of 2050, the transition to a climate resilient, biodiversity rich, environmentally sustainable and climate neutral economy for the city and county.

The Draft Plan has been prepared by Waterford City & County Council (WCCC) in partnership with the Eastern & Midlands Climate Action Regional Office (CARO) together with the Southeast Energy Agency (SEEA) and with the support of the Environment, Biodiversity and Climate Action Strategic Policy Committee and the Elected Members of Waterford City & County Council.

A flipbook of the Draft Climate Action Plan is available below

The core targets of Waterford City & County Council’s Draft Climate Action Plan are:

  • 50% improvement in the Council’s energy efficiency by 2030
  • 51% reduction in the Council’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2030
  • To prepare for extreme weather
  • To facilitate the citizens of Waterford in reducing their emissions where the Council has an influence.

The actions within this Draft Climate Action Plan include those for which the Council is fully accountable for across its own buildings, operations, services, and functions; as well as actions for which the Council will influence, co-ordinate, facilitate and advocate on, for climate action and to prepare for climate change.

The following supplementary documents were also prepared to support this Draft Climate Action Plan:

  • Strategic Environmental Assessment Report
  • Natura Impact Report
  • Climate Change Risk Assessment Tier 1 Report for Waterford County and City.
  • Tier 2 Baseline Emissions Inventory Report for Waterford County
  • Waterford City Decarbonisation Zone Tier 3 Baseline Emission Inventory Report

WCCC are requesting your views, observations, and recommendations for consideration in the preparation of the Climate Action Plan. The closing date for these submissions is 5pm on December 15th.
