Where do emissions arise in these sectors?

These sectors are responsible for emissions from the operation of manufacturing plants as well as space heating, water heating, cooking and laundry involved in commercial services.

Questions to bear in mind as you read this page -

  1. What would you like the Council to do to help reduce emissions in these sectors?
  2. What would you like to see the Manufacturing and Commercial Sector doing to reduce emissions from their operations?

Where does the Council have an influence?

  • Local Enterprise Office
  • Enforcing waste legislation
  • Through Commercial Rates that reward businesses taking climate action
  • Smarter Travel Initiatives

What is the national picture?

The 2023 National Climate Action plan set a target that Manufacturing and Commercial Services along with the Public Sector would switch to alternative sources of heating such as district heating and renewable energy along with making energy savings that would result in a carbon emission reduction nationally of 375ktCO2e.

What is the local picture?

Total emissions from the Manufacturing and Commercial Sector in Waterford were calculated to be 467 ktCO2e, which equates to 24% of the total greenhouse gas emissions from County Waterford.

What areas are not covered by the Council?

Businesses with a floor area larger than 500m2 need to assess their energy usage every 4 years this is reported nationally. Ultimately the responsibility for reducing carbon emissions in business lies with the business themselves.

What are other places doing?

London’s Business Energy Awards Challenge taps into the competitive disposition of private sector enterprises to drive reductions in energy use and CO2 emissions in key London businesses. By rewarding outstanding achievements through Mayoral recognition and a diverse array of awards, London’s Business Energy Challenge aims to foster low-carbon business practices and building usage across a large range of industry types.
