Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act (1994)
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Active Travel Scheme
Scoil Mhuire National School, Butlerstown, County Waterford

Waterford City and County Council proposes to undertake the construction of traffic calming and pedestrian measures outside Butlerstown National School on the L4047 and L4049 at Butlerstown, Co. Waterford.

The proposed scheme consists of traffic calming, pedestrian crossing upgrade, footpath widening, buildouts, parking realignment, and placemaking (including tree pits, benches, and colourful school gateway elements on approaches to the school). The scheme also proposes improved pedestrian access to the old school car park on the L4047.

The objective of the Safe Routes to School programme is to prioritise safe access to the school, improve school visibility through signposting and placemaking, and reduce vehicle congestion at the front of school, as set out on the attached drawing.

The drawing is available for inspection on Waterford City and County Council’s website consult.waterfordcouncil.ie and is also on display in our Customer Services Departments in Bailey’s New Street in Waterford City and Davitt’s Quay, Dungarvan from Wednesday 19th March 2025 to Wednesday 2nd April 2025.

The Council will consider any submissions or observations made in writing regarding the proposal.

All submissions should be directed to Dylan White, Communications and Behavioural Change Officer, Active Travel Department, Waterford City and County Council, City Hall, Waterford, or by email to activetravel@waterfordcouncil.ie to be received by 5:00 PM on Wednesday 2nd April 2025.  Submissions may also be made online here on this page, using the "Make A Submission" button on the right.

Please note that comments, including the names of respondents, submitted to Waterford City & County Council regarding this process will form part of the statutorily required report to be presented at the Metropolitan Municipal District meeting of Waterford City and County Council to be held on 22nd April 2025. Accordingly, they may also appear in the public domain.
