Waterford City & County Council propose to undertake the construction of a 2km long Active Travel scheme along the Inner Ring Road from Ashe Road (R686/L1530 junction) as far as the Passage Road (R680/R709 junction).
The proposed works will include:
Construction of a dedicated two-way protected cycleway typically 3m wide on one side of the route through reallocation of existing road space.
2 no. traffic lanes - 3m to 3.75m wide.
Junction tightening measures along the route.
Raised treatment at side roads and entrances as required.
Reconstruction of the Folly Roundabout to current design standards.
Upgrade of roundabouts and junctions to accommodate both vehicle and active travel user movements.
Use of L90343 Richardson’s Folly as a Shared Street.
Construction of new shared footpath areas.
Footpath improvements at select locations along route.
Construction of new pedestrian crossings.
Upgrade of existing signalised crossings.
The objective of the scheme is to provide Active Travel infrastructure along the Inner Ring Road as set out on the attached drawing. The scheme aims to enhance safety for vulnerable road users, to improve connections to existing footpaths and provide pedestrian crossing points close to natural desire lines.
The preliminary design drawings are available for inspection on Waterford City and County Council’s consultation portal at consult.waterfordcouncil.ie and are also on display in our Customer Services Departments in Bailey’s New Street in the City and Davitt’s Quay, Dungarvan from Wednesday 23rd April 2025 to Wednesday 21st May 2025.
